This air fryer buying guide is for anyone in Sri Lanka choosing a first air fryer. Instead of prices, it covers the four things that decide whether you will actually use it every week: capacity, wattage, the bowl and what it cooks well. If you want the cost and running cost, our air fryer price guide covers that.

Quick answer

  • 4 to 5 litres suits a family of 3 to 4; 2 to 3 litres suits 1 to 2 people.
  • 1200W heats a 4.5L bowl quickly; 20 minutes uses about 0.4 units.
  • A glass bowl lets you watch food crisp without opening it.
  • Great for chicken, cutlets, fries and reheating; not for wet batters or curries.

How does an air fryer work?

An air fryer is a small, fast oven. A heating element sits above the food and a fan blows the hot air round it at speed, so the outside dries and browns while the inside cooks. That is why chicken and fries come out crisp with a spoon of oil or none.

Because it cooks with moving air, how you load it matters as much as the machine itself: food in a single layer, with gaps, crisps; a crowded pile steams.

What capacity air fryer do you need?

Capacity is the size of the bowl in litres. As a rough guide:

Bowl size Suits Typical batch
2 to 3 litres 1 to 2 people A portion of fries for one or two
4 to 5 litres A family of 3 to 4 A family batch of drumsticks or fish cutlets
6 litres and up Larger families A whole family batch in one go

The Greenlife 4.5L Glass Air Fryer sits in the family band. If you often cook for six or more, plan on two rounds for fried items; each round only takes a few minutes in a hot bowl.

What wattage should an air fryer have?

Wattage is how fast it heats. More watts bring the air up to temperature sooner and recover heat faster when you open it. For a 4 to 5 litre bowl, 1200W is a sensible match; the Greenlife model is 1200W with a twin turbo fan.

Running cost is simple to work out: 1200W for 20 minutes is about 0.4 units of electricity. Plug it straight into a wall socket rather than an extension board shared with a kettle or iron.

Glass bowl or non-stick basket?

Most air fryers hide the food in a closed drawer with a non-stick basket. A glass bowl lets you watch the colour change through the front, so you stop at exactly the crispness you like without opening it and losing heat. It also has no coating to wear thin. The trade-off is that glass is heavier and gets hot, so use the oven mitts that come in the box.

Which controls and functions matter?

  • Temperature range: 60 to 200°C covers gentle reheating and dehydrating up to proper crisping.
  • Timer and auto shut-off: set it and walk away; it switches off at the end.
  • Functions: air fry, roast, bake, grill, dehydrate, toast and thaw on the Greenlife model.
  • Accessories: a crisper plate, a grill rack and oven mitts come in the box.

What does an air fryer cook well, and what does it not?

Cooks well: chicken drumsticks and wings, fish cutlets and patties, crumbed fish, fries and sweet potato wedges, roasted vegetables, cashews and peanuts, and reheated short eats, which come out crisp instead of soggy. Our 7 Sri Lankan dishes to make in an air fryer is a good first week of recipes.

Not its job: wet batters such as pakora batter, which drip before they set; curries and rice; and very light items like papadam, which the fan can blow around. For a side by side on oil and taste, see air fryer vs deep frying.

Where should an air fryer go in your kitchen?

  • On a flat, heat-safe counter, not on a plastic tray or cloth.
  • With space behind and above it for the hot air vent, as the manual advises; keep it away from curtains and wall cupboards.
  • Near a wall socket, so the cable is not stretched across the counter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a 4.5 litre air fryer big enough for a family of four?

Yes, for most meals. For a big batch of fried items, cook in two short rounds so each piece crisps.

Do I need oil?

Not for frozen fries or crumbed items. A light brush or spray of oil helps fresh chicken and vegetables brown.

Can I bake in it?

Yes. The bake function handles small cakes and muffins in a tin that fits the bowl with space around it.

Should I preheat it?

A few minutes of preheating gives a crisper result, especially for fries and cutlets.

What warranty does it have?

1 year against manufacturing defects on a Green Life invoice.
