A food chopper takes the slow part out of Sri Lankan cooking: onions, garlic, ginger and green chilli for every curry, and mince for cutlets. This guide compares manual, electric and cordless choppers, with the bowl sizes and prices at Green Life, so you buy the one that fits how you cook.

Quick answer

  • Greenlife electric choppers cost Rs 2,999 to Rs 4,999; Brewine models Rs 8,499 and Rs 10,999.
  • A 2 litre bowl suits a family; choose 3 litres for big batches and mince.
  • Pick a stainless steel bowl if you mince meat often.
  • Choose Brewine if you want a garlic peeler or cordless use.

Which type of chopper do you need?

  • Electric (mains): the everyday choice for onions, vegetables and mince. More power and bigger bowls.
  • Cordless (USB): for small jobs anywhere in the kitchen, such as garlic paste or a quick sambol, with no cable.
  • Manual: press a handle to spin the blades; no electricity, slower for big batches.

Plastic bowl or stainless steel bowl?

The two Greenlife 2L choppers share the same 300W motor and four stainless steel blades. The clear plastic bowl lets you watch the texture and stop at a coarse chop or a fine paste. The stainless steel bowl is sturdier, resists odours from onion and fish, and adds a second speed. If you mince meat often, choose steel.

What size bowl suits your kitchen?

A 2 litre bowl handles onions and mince for a family meal. Choose the 3 litre model if you cook in big batches, prepare for a gathering or run a small food business; it doubles as a meat grinder. The Brewine 1.2 litre suits a smaller household that wants two speeds and a garlic peeler, and the cordless Brewine suits small daily jobs.

Is a garlic peeler worth it?

If you peel garlic every day, yes. Both Brewine choppers come with a silicone garlic peeler: drop the cloves in, run it briefly and the skins come away without sticky fingers. If you buy peeled garlic or use little of it, a Greenlife chopper does the chopping for less.

How do you get the best results?

  • Cut onions and meat into rough chunks first so the blades catch them evenly.
  • Use short presses and check, rather than one long run, to avoid a watery paste.
  • Do not overfill the bowl; two half batches chop more evenly than one full one.
  • Wash the bowl and blades straight after use; the parts detach for cleaning.

What do Sri Lankan kitchens use a chopper for most?

Onion, garlic, ginger and green chilli for the base of a curry; chicken or fish for cutlets and patties; carrot, leeks and cabbage for fried rice and kottu; and coconut sambol, where a few short pulses chop the onion and chilli before you mix in the scraped coconut. A chopper also saves tears: onions are cut in a closed bowl, so far less of the sting reaches your eyes.

What a chopper does not do well is liquid work. For smoothies, soups or wet coconut milk, use a blender or a mixer grinder instead.

Our recommendation

For most families, the Greenlife 2L stainless steel chopper at Rs 3,999 is the everyday workhorse. Go to the 3L model for big batches and mince, and to Brewine if garlic peeling or cordless use matters to you. For kottu nights, our kottu chopper guide goes deeper.
